When the Medway rose in January, households in Yalding and East Farleigh discovered that “flood cover” meant very different things depending on who they were insured with. Some were paid within a fortnight. Some are still arguing about the definition of groundwater. Protect Kent was set up to report exactly that kind of difference.
This is a publication about home insurance and household protection for people who live in Kent: the Romney Marsh, the Thanet coast, the clay soils around Sevenoaks and Tonbridge that move in dry summers, the Medway towns and the commuter belt from Dartford to Ashford. The county has flood risk, coastal erosion, subsidence and some of the highest contents premiums outside London, and national guides do not reflect any of it.
Every article names the place it is about and uses local figures: what a Canterbury terrace pays for buildings cover compared with a Deal seafront flat, which postcodes sit in Flood Re, how long a subsidence claim actually took in Maidstone. If a paragraph could be about any other county, it is cut.
The site is edited by Sarah Whitlock, a Kent resident who has spent years reporting on household finance and the claims that go wrong. Protect Kent is an independent UK publication. It does not sell or arrange insurance and takes no commission from anyone who does.
